SELF FEEDING LESSON PLAN

M’s breakfast self-feeding lesson plan:

Goal of lesson: Daily Living- M will accept help for 50% of utensil use during her breakfast routine. M will put plate in finished basket when done eating.

*A future goal for M is to load her plate with teacher supervision.

Materials needed: Anticipation box with divided plate symbol, cup and straw, now and finished basket, and attempted use of utensil. M’s preferred food choices include 2 servings of fruit (1 orange and 1 apple), 2 sausage links, apple juice.

Important Note: M’s food must be cut up in small bite size pieces, as M is at risk for overstuffing her mouth and choking if not closely monitored. Please set-up M’s place setting just as above.

Lesson plan steps:

  1. Check M’s anticipation calendar and help her retrieve her divided plate symbol using hand under hand.

  2. Guide M to placing her divided plate symbol in her now basket.

  3. Guide M to sit at the table to her chair with the beads on the back of it.

  4. M will then usually reach out to feel for her plate. Currently the plate is pre-loaded with food.

  5. Attempt to use hand under hand to assist M with using her utensil to bring food to her mouth. M needs total assistance with placing the food on the utensil at this point.

  6. Guide M’s hand down to her plate to place her utensil down in between bites.

  7. M needs close supervision to avoid over stuffing her mouth, as she is at risk for choking.

  8. Sit close to M during breakfast and place hand next to hers on the table so that she can feel your hand, as she will be more inclined to guide your hand over to her plate to request more food if she wants it.

  9. If she does this, use the verbal phrase “M wants more.” To confirm her request for more food.

  10. Encourage M to take juice/water during her meal by handing her the cup and use the verbal phrase “juice.”

  11. When M appears to be done with her meal, guide M to her finished basket and with hand under hand assist her to place her plate in the basket and use the verbal phrase “finished.”

  12. After she has placed her plate in the basket, use hand under hand to guide her to place her cup in the finished basket and use the verbal phrase “finished.”

Evaluation at end of lesson: Determine the percentage of assistance M allowed for utensil use without throwing the utensil on the floor. Did M initiate by guiding your hand to the plate to request more food? Did M initiate being finished by placing her dish in the basket after being guided to basket?
