DAILY GROOMING ROUTINE

Goal of Lesson:

 

M will develop independence and a basic understanding for performing her morning self-care routine. M will reach out to explore the next step with a 3 to 4 step sequence box in 3 out of 4 opportunities.

 

 Materials needed:

 

4 slot calendar box, M’s personal self-care items, and finished basket.

 

 

Lesson Plan Steps:

 

  1. Guide M to the 4 slot calendar box for grooming located in the bathroom area with the verbal phrase “time for grooming.”

  2. Use hand under hand with M to guide her from the left to right side of the box so she will know how long the activity will last.

  3. Bring M’s hand back to the first step, and use the verbal phrase “brush teeth.”

  4. Perform task, and then use hand under hand to help M place the items in her finished basket. Use the verbal phrase “finished” when she places the items in the basket.

  5. Guide M using hand under hand to the next step in her calendar box, and use the verbal phrase “brush hair.”

  6. Perform hair brushing task and then guide M to her finished basket and use the verbal phrase “finished.”

  7. Guide M back to the next step in her calendar box and use the verbal phrase “deodorant.”

  8. Perform the task and then with hand under hand guide M to bring the deodorant to the finished basket and use the verbal phrase “finished.”

  9. Guide M back to the last step in her calendar box and use the phrase “soft brush.”

  10. Help M Perform her brushing protocol to her hands, arms and feet with slow, soft strokes. M likes to sit in her bean bag chair when doing this.

  11. Complete task and guide M to finished basket and use the verbal phrase “finished” while helping M place the sensory brush in the basket.

 

Evaluation at end of Lesson:

 

Determine how grooming routine lesson went: Did M initiate picking up grooming item 1 out of 4 times? Did M initiate placing grooming item in finished basket 1 out 4 times? Did M initiate moving left to right in calendar box?

 

Data will be collected in M's daily progress chart spreadsheet,  teacher or TA will input data. Substitute teachers to  communicate information via hard copy daily progress chart.
